I had a bit of an epiphany in my garage this morning. I had just finishing scratching up my new bicycle (no, I didn't fall off or anything like that) and I was a little ticked off at myself. I was muttering things under my breath, annoyed that new things never stay new. Never. Things break.

I find myself easily annoyed by things that get broken or messed up in some way and fall out of their so-called perfect condition. I won't bore you with psycho-analyzing myself and why I think this way...but, suffice it to say, this is not the first time I have experienced this particular frustration.

Anyway, right in the midst of my frustration/anger/annoyance, God spoke. And He asked me "Why are you so surprised when things get messed up, ruined or broken? This is pretty much the story of humanity...perfection gone awry. That's why I sent my Son...to pick up the pieces and restore your life."

I knew that, you may say. But for some reason, I just hadn't been able to look at things this way before and my perspectcive was changed today. Banging up my bike transformed me a little bit for the better today. God knows I'm nowhere near perfect and unblemished, but somehow I don't think He's thrown by that. He just extends his forgiveness, picks me up, brushes me off and asks me to keep pedaling.

Draw Near to God (Daniel Fast Day #20)

In Old Testament times the Psalms were the prayer book and hymn book of God’s people. Jews and Christians alike have drawn strength from them.

Psalm 23

Choose to read this Psalm.
Read it all the way through.
Ask God to comfort you through its words.
Read it again, verse by verse. Pause and reflect on each verse before moving on to the next one.

Psalm 23 has been called the Shepherd’s Psalm. But the Shepherd does not speak at all. So it has also been called the Sheep’s Psalm, for the sheep do all the speaking.

You prepare a table before me. This “table” was essential to wounded or sick sheep. Healthy sheep did not care for ill sheep. At best, they would go over to the sick sheep and eat all the grass around him, leaving him none. At worse, they would butt him and push him around. So the Shepherd prepared a “table” for the sick sheep. The shepherd marked out an area about 20ft (7meters) x 15 ft (5meters). He put a rod on one side and his staff on the other side. He lay down at the top of the protective rectangle, after he had placed his cloak at the bottom. No other sheep dared to cross over the rod, staff, cloak, or shepherd to eat any of the grass. In the presence of his enemies the ill sheep now had a “table” to protect him.

Count all the times that Jesus has made a place to comfort you!!

Don’t know how to pray. Here are the four things that we have been teaching our 2 and 3 old Sunday school children.

God, you are special.
God, your way is always best.
Please give me the things I need.
Please forgive me when I do wrong and help me to do what’s right.

I've been reading through Proverbs during my time alone during this fast and I've also been re-reading a few chapters in The Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster. Here's the resounding theme I keep hearing in my head:

Shut up!

OK, not those exact word, but something close to it. Here's a nicer way to put what I'm learning:

Detoxing from our consumption laced society, whether it's food or noise, is a good thing if it means we step back, examine our life and inner thoughts and draw closer to God.

Here's what Foster says about solitude:

"Inward solitude will have outward manifestations. There will be the freedom to be alone, not in order to be away from people but in order to hear better. Jesus lived in inward "heart solitude." He also experienced outward solitude."

Here are a few times Jesus went off by himself:

Matthew 4:1-11 when He went to fast and prepare for ministry in the desert.

Luke 6:12 when He was about to select his disciples.

Matthew 14:13 when He received word of John the Baptist's death.

Fear of being alone drives us to create noise in our lives. Solitude frees us of being influenced by others, impulsive decisions, and distractions that keep us from truly focusing on our source of life and hope.

Here are a few ways to build the discipline of solitude or silence in your life:

1. Plan for it. Organize times for solitude like you would a meeting for work. It might be an hour or a weekend, but make time and write it down.

2. Go unplugged. You can't really get solitude with kids yelling in the other room or the TV on. Avoid competition. Turn off the radio on your drive home from work.

3. Take it outside. Quietness and listening to the gentle sounds of nature go hand-in-hand.

Ezekiel 3:3 (NIV) Then he said to me, "Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it." So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.

My favorite TV show is NCIS. No wait, it’s the show called BIGGEST LOSER. On the other hand, I love AMERICAN IDOL, and just about any football game. THE OFFICE makes me laugh out loud, and well – you get the idea.

There are many things we take in, right? Lot’s of things that we listen to, watch, read or even eat! And we take these things in, because we are hoping for “sweetness” – that it would taste good in a way.

I wonder if those things we take in, can dominate in a way that we aren’t able to taste the sweetness of God’s Word.

“Today, I will refresh my commitment to tasting God’s Word. I’m confident that I will find it sweet to my taste. I will reduce my consumption of other things that may water down God’s Word in my life. God’s Word will fill me, and in it I will find real satisfaction!”

I love reading from The Message Bible. It states it like it is. Easy to read and relevant for us today. But doesn't this shock you a bit? Can you imagine a woman on the street corner yelling this in your face? I can guarantee you that I would not take kindly to someone yelling in my face "blockhead....shape up!" But that's what Lady Wisdom does. It's in the Bible. It's an "in your face" challeng for us to listen up and wise up!

If you've read Proverbs before, you've probably picked up that there are two types of women portrayed in the first several chapters. There is a secretive and sleek seductress who is waiting around every corner, and then there's Lady wisdom, standing out in the open blatantly yelling truth.

One of the 4 freedom's the Free Methodist Church was founded upon was the avoidance of secret societies. This means we do things openly. We don't form secret groups with secret codes and secretive ideas and thoughts.

I think this founding freedom is good for us to remember. Like the woman in proverbs, not much good happens when done in a secretive fashion unless it's a surprise party. Most of the time when you put your hand up and say something in a hushed tone it means somethings not right. Lady wisdom speaks with honesty and speaks openly. She speaks with love and respect. She doesn't lead others astray. She doesn't focus on knowledge...that's just heady stuff. She focuses on the truth of God's Word. She desires for her life to be more like Him.

I know which one I want to be! How about you?

Prayer: Lord, please keep my words pure, help me to speak cautiously with You as my guide.

Daniel Fast Day #7

What was Daniel’s secret to health? Was it solely based on his diet? Well if you count his “spiritual food” then the answer is YES!

Read Psalm 1:2-3 and you find a description of the way of a righteous man. It is a fact that man cannot live without water and when I read Ps. 1:3 I see a picture of Daniel planting himself so he is dependent on the living water of God’s infilling presence. His devotion to God yielded not only physical strength but God used him to influence of kingdom toward following God.

Think of Daniel in Daniel 6. We are very familiar with the story of Daniel in the lion’s den, but have you ever thought much about verses 4 and 5? The governors and satraps who hated Daniel could not find any way to charge him with a fault unless it was related to the law of God. What a remarkable testimony. Why do you suppose that was true? Look at the last half of verse 10. Daniel knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, AS WAS HIS CUSTOM SINCE EARLY DAYS. The source for his strength came from where he “planted” himself.

Take Daniel’s lead and spend time in Bible reading, meditation, and prayer each day.

Daniel Fast Day #5

Read Proverbs 4:18-27

There’s just something about fasting that seems entirely too demanding. Or maybe legalistic. Many of us have fallen away from the practice. Some of us grew up with strict religious backgrounds and we were forced to fast, so instead of desiring to be with God, it just made us scared of God….like he was looking down on us like a naughty child just waiting to slap our hands for reaching for a cookie. Some of us grew up with no fasting at all. Fasting, what’s fasting? We couldn’t dream of giving up a meal, let alone several items for 3 weeks! And deep down, we are really skeptical. We ask questions like “Is this really necessary?” and we really doubt whether we attempt something like fasting if we’re really able to do it.

Well, fasting really shouldn’t be about either of those things. God doesn’t command us to fast. There was lots of fasting in the Old Testament, but not so much after Jesus. It was a practice, not a requirement, and Jesus himself fasted on occasion. So should we fast? Yeah, probably. Should we look at it as a requirement? Absolutely not! Choose for the next three weeks to resemble this verse when Solomon says in Proverbs 4:20-22:

“Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice.Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart!Those who discover these words live, really live; body and soul, they're bursting with health.”

I love the passage “tune to my voice.” I tune in to a lot of things. I tune in to the T.V. I tune in to books and magazines. I tune in to facebook. I tune in to twitter, but struggle with finding the space for God’s voice in my life. I’m in a generation of information overload, yet I don’t get nearly enough of God’s voice. Sometimes I wonder if I’d really recognize it if I heard it.
Let this next three weeks be a time of focusing on really hearing God’s voice. When you are hungry or you desire rich foods, remind yourself that His voice is much more discernible without distraction. Take time to pray and be in his word.

Prayer: Lord, help me to remove the clutter in my life to really hear and know you. Amen

Daniel Fast Day #2

When I taught second grade I used to give my students questions to think and write about. One of them was "would you rather receive the gift you always wanted or give your mother a gift you know she would absolutely love? 98% of my students said they would choose to give a gift to their mother. Their reasoning was because they loved her. Plain and simple. They were eagerly willing to sacrifice something they dearly wanted in order to give something special to someone they dearly love.
Goodness, kindness, and love thrives in God's wonderful children.
I'm sure we have all had another person do something nice for us. Whether it was a small or big favor our first instinct is to want to return the favor and pay that person back in some way. But, I love the idea of paying good deeds forward instead of backwards.

It says in 2 Peter 1:5-7 ....make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge: and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love."

Prayer: Lord, as we go through these weeks of Daniel's Fast, help us to think less about the foods we are giving up and focus instead on You and how we can serve You by helping others.

Philip. 3:19 (NIV) Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.

I think a lot about food. It’s almost as if sometimes I’m afraid that I’ll starve. When Mary and I get in the car to drive around town on my day off, I usually slow us down because I’m gathering food for the trip. I want some chocolate to go with my coffee. And maybe an apple and banana in case I get hungry. Also, a bag of pecans, because I love pecans and maybe I’ll get hungry and need to eat them. And one more thing, I’ll jam some leftover cake into a Rubbermaid container – in case the chocolate isn’t enough for my coffee.

Finally, I get to the car. All this for a trip to Meijer!

“Today, may I joyfully declare war on the ‘stomach-god’ who seeks to rule. I’m reminded that my fulfillment is not in being filled temporarily – but in being fulfilled eternally. Today, I refocus on the ONE who can fill me. I will seek His will and His ways – and take glory in God’s goodness!”

Read Proverbs: 3:5-6

As we draw closer to God with our thoughts and our actions, we become more dependent on Him and less on ourself in all of our daily endeavors. God has the perfect plan for our live if we will just step aside and allow Him to be in charge. I recently read an acronym based on the word SELF which pretty much says what we need to do.

S-urrender to Christ daily
E-mpty yourself of anything that hinders you from doing His will
L-ift up your heart to Him
F-eed on His Word

As you go through the Daniel Fast remember SELF, and it will draw you nearer to God.

Daniel Fast 2010

It's that time of year again at Portage Free Methodist Church! The Daniel Fast will convene on February 17th with a potluck meal together and will end on March 10th. That's 21 great days to honor God through prayer and fasting together as a church family. Each Wednesday night following our meal together (5:45), we will join together in prayer in the Sanctuary (6:45 pm). Each Wednesday night we will have a different prayer focus.

If you would like to read more about the Daniel Fast, Please Refer to Daniel 1, and read the following explanation at wikipedia: Daniel Fast . Please look for a complete brochure and cookbook in the lobby area on February 13th. Mostly, we live on fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, rice and whole grains. No sugar, no meat, no processed foods, no cheese, etc.

Yes, we do miss coffee, and yes we do miss chocolate. But the Bible says Daniel was more physically and spiritually fit from honoring God through the most basic of foods. This is an opportunity for us to live without some of the pleasures we take for granted every day and to be reminded of how God provides for us and how our body is a temple. How we treat it matters to God. When we live without, we also force ourselves in to dependence on God. We are reminded in our hunger that He sustains everything. In that way we draw near to Him.

This year our focus comes from the Latin word "proximus." It basically means to draw near. As I write this another earthquake has hit Haiti. It's a good time to come to our knees, pray for our world, our nation, our community and our church. Won't you consider fasting with us and taking some time to "draw near" to God?

(P.S. This is not an all-or-nothing deal. You won't get pelted with raw vegetable if you decide to eat eggs. Know what I mean? You do what you can, and what you feel will help you draw near to God! This should be something you choose to do joyfully not out of guilt)

Sail On - A Lesson in Serving

My wife, Merle and I just returned from a fabulous cruise vacation in the southwest Caribbean Sea on the Carnival cruise ship, Glory. One afternoon as we were sitting on the lido deck reading and enjoying the sun, I began watching the other passengers enjoying themselves in the pools. I got thinking “too bad church isn’t more like this.”

But as I thought more about it, a church like Christ desired the church to be, should be more like a cruise ship.

The captain of the ship is like the pastor, whose main duty is to set the course for the ship. The crew, are like the members of a church, each committed to following the captain. The captain isn’t expected to perform all the duties, he entrusts most of the work to his staff and the crew. It is every crew member’s responsibility to do their part to keep the ship operating and on course. If we truly believe that God has placed all our leaders in position of authority to lead his church (Romans 13), imagine what can happen when the ones who are sitting in those positions work together? God can move in a mighty way. Together we can move people towards maturity in Christ. I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter what position you are in, all those positions need to work as a team. The lead pastor, the associate pastor, and the various ministry leaders, they all need to work as a team and lead people in the same direction. If the lead pastor is trying to move them one way, and another leader is going another way, well, that’s no fun. And who knows where the ship will end up.

The observed that the crew served in various capacities and responsibilities but all with diligence and commitment. Some were responsible for caring for the ship, to keep it maintained. Some served the passengers like the room stewards who cleaned our cabins twice a day, made towel creations to greet us, turned our beds down at night and left chocolates on our pillows each evening. The entertainment staff did everything they could to make this cruise memorable and enjoyable. Then some served in various administrative and leadership functions (guest services, security, medical, etc.) all under the direction of the captain.

Watching the crew serve reminded me of the words in Ephesians 6:6-8 (New International Version), “Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.” I found their commitment to serve so fascinating, I decided to take some time and talk to a few of them to find out more about them and what motivated them. They came from various countries, but each signed contracts for serve for 7 months and then had 2 months off before they resigned for another tour. Most made major sacrifices by leaving their spouse and/or children at home, so they could provide for their families needs. It was interesting to learn that most of the crew loved serving on the ship and had served for several years with no interest in leaving anytime soon. They all shared that they loved serving the guest and making each guest feel special.

While we found it exciting and enjoyable to participate in the many activities and entertainment on board the ship, the ports also provided opportunities to experience other cultures, meet many other interesting people, and do and see things I never imagined. This is also a lot like church, there are a lot of activities to keep us busy in the church, but reaching out to the community through S.O.N. Ministry and Global Missions gives us opportunities to do so much more.

There was however, one incident while on the cruise that I found especially disturbing and sadly also common for the church. At our first port stop at Cozumel, Mexico, one couple was left behind because they did not get back to the ship on time. As the ship was leaving the port, the couple came running down the dock, but it was too late. The ship sailed on. Everyone was previously warned, be back at least a half hour before the ship was scheduled to leave. The ship sounded its horn several times to let everyone know it was preparing to leave. But sadly this couple decided to ignore the warnings and ultimately was left behind. This incident made me think, are we as a church properly warning people about missing God’s promise for eternal life. There are many of our family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers that may be ignoring the warning signals. I was challenged to be more diligent in sounding the warning to those I know and care about.

So now I’m back home from my voyage on the Glory. Hopefully, I will remember the lessons I learned on this voyage and I hope this has challenged you also to be a faithful crew member for our glorious ship, Portage Free Methodist .

This Sunday: Worship Fully

The things we desire are the things we worship.

I don’t know about you – but the hoopla surrounding Christmas sure opens my eyes to all the things out there that I don’t have! That’s the point right? The commercials are designed to create within us a hunger that their product promises to fulfill. But I’ve found that even if I buy their product – I’m still hungry!

The Advent Conspiracy is designed to actually satisfy our hunger by helping us focus rightly on God. Today, we’re talking about worship. I love the verse in Psalm 145 that says “You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.” What a great promise. I’m ready for my desires to begin to be satisfied in God – you too?

Today, we’ve moved the message to the beginning of the program so that we can lean into worship and prayer together with all we’ve got! I’m certain that even as you exalt God – he’ll speak to you with the words you most need to hear! So, join me in opening your heart to him.

Luke 2:29-32, 38 (NIV) "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."

Instead of "give presents" this year, the theme running through our hearts and our church this Christmas season is "give presence." God's presence, that is. We've teamed up with a really great movement called Advent Conspiracy. Every year we hear the word's "the true meaning of Christmas," thrown around a lot. But we barely stop to let those words sink in before we're off running. The concept behind Advent Conspiracy is simple: worship fully, spend less, give more and love all. At River Church @ PFMC we want to take some deep breathes during this Christmas season, slow down and really examine what it would mean if we did these four things. Not only that, but what would it mean to give one less present to each person in your family and instead give that money towards fresh water wells for people in Haiti? So go ahead.....take a breath deep....we just let you off the hook....you won't need to do as much shopping! Instead, join us on Sunday mornings as we examine the Advent Conspiracy.

Bongbong

Meet Glenda Bongbong of the Philippines.
She needed a loan. Wants to use her motorcycle to transport people. And then, she can pay for her 7 kids schooling and care for them properly. She and her husband Jose, live in Panglao, where the average annual income is only 1,175.00.

Last Sunday, we pulled the pocket change out of our pockets and dropped it on the floor. We scooped it up, and it was the perfect amount ($55.03) to complete the loan to the Bongbongs so they can provide for their family.

God is good.

Quick Check - where are you going?

Several hours into the journey, it was well past midnight. We were travelling in unknown territory – a new road to me. Flying through the mountains at 70 miles per hour, my eyelids grew heavy and my head became foggy with sleepiness. The family was asleep and I was trying to get a few more miles in before we took a break. Driving all night was hard work! But the end would be well worth the trip.

What I spotted next woke me to full alert! The sign said “Louisville, 220 miles”. Now, that may not seem like anything scary to you – but even in my tiredness, I knew that Louisville was west of me by several hundred miles, and I was supposed to be going SOUTH. I had no idea where I was, and realized I didn’t even know what road I was on! The nice “cruise” down to Florida was suddenly marked with stress! Somewhere (when?) I took a turn off of the correct highway and I never even knew it! How could this happen?

It happens more than we like to think. We enjoy the journey, thinking we are headed towards that place of satisfaction. What we don’t know is this: we’re on the wrong road.

Wouldn’t that just be a terrible waste?

Before we go another step forward, let’s get out the map, find where we are, and ensure we are headed in the right direction. That will make this journey make sense. Despite the inevitable valleys and mountains, it’s nice to know you’re headed in the right direction!

We are in week three of the series “the office”. We’re finding that our 9-5 really matters and is a platform for bringing praise to God.

Most kids, when thinking of what job they’ll aim at in life, think of the perks! How much they’ll get paid – and more significant - how important they might become. Because as we all know, importance pays off! The more important you are the more people wait on you! Greatness is associated with being served!

But what if, when you get to the top of the ladder of success, you find out that it is the wrong ladder?

Jesus talked much about this. He said that if you want to become great, you must become servant of all.

But what does that look like? How do I serve those around me? What if you’re the boss – will serving others undermine your ability to lead them? And then, what kind of attitude keeps my servant-heart soft?

Together, we’ll learn about keeping on the “right” ladder!

College/Career 20 Something

Hey - it's finally here! The new group for college and career type people: you twenty somethings!
For starters, we'll meet at the Cryderman's Home - 2320 Surry, Schoolcraft, MI (call the office if you need more details!). The plan is to meet twice a month for just some great hang time and goofing off! The relationships will drive this group! We're starting this Sunday, October 4 at 7pm. We'll have great snacks and maybe dip our toes into the jacuzzi! We'd love you to join us!

You may have wondered why there are no “names” on the cross.

As a young pastor, I wanted to celebrate new people coming to Christ. Above the door entering the auditorium, we began hanging giant, mounted shark hooks – one for each new believer. Why? Because we were “fishers of people” of course!

The hooks were a very fun way to measure our efforts at making disciples.

Of course, you know that the hooks on the wall aren’t nearly as important as the names that are written in the Lambs Book of Life! (Rev. 3:5)

One thing troubled me: sometimes someone would become a Christian in December, and then “again” in January. Hmmm. While I celebrated these new and deepening commitments to Christ, I wondered if there might be a better way to celebrate.

And at the same time, I began to study a little more deeply what Christian Baptism was all about. More and more, my enthusiasm about this public profession of faith was reignited! For many, this critical command becomes a brand new start in one’s relationship with God! For many, the “effort” that goes along with baptism causes one to count the cost before declaring the decision. For many, this decision to follow Christ is best celebrated with the “Family of God” gathered around the baptistry, where we see before our very eyes the “old man dying” so the “new man can live!”

I love hooks on the wall and names on the cross – I really do. However, for now we are not placing names on the cross – but that doesn’t diminish our desire to see the lost become found! In no way does this mean we are shifting our attention away from those without God. Rather, we are redoubling our efforts towards helping people find Jesus! More than anything else – I long for us to work together, becoming all things to all people so that we might save some!

For the time being, let’s focus our attention on Christian Baptism. This amazing sacrament is a sort of “launch pad” for an authentic relationship with God. For many, this becomes that point in their life that clarifies what they know to be true: “I once was lost, but now I am found!” This act of grace is timeless, and as a sacrament, is more than just a sign! God is real and present in the actual act of Baptism.

Have you been baptized as a Christian? What I mean is, once you crossed the line into the faith, from being your own leader, to following Christ – have you received Christian baptism? If not, why not now?

You may not remember the “day” you said “yes” to Christ. You know now, that you believe in him, and that he’s forgiven your sins – but you don’t remember that “crisis moment” – for you, it was one step at a time, inch by inch, turning your heart over to Jesus. And it seems kind of weird to now, perhaps years later, be baptized. Let me remind you – baptism is not optional. You need to be baptized as a follower of Christ!

Perhaps you are considering becoming a Christian. Baptism is an awesome way to express this commitment: “I am dying to self, and living for Christ!”

If you would like to be baptized – let us know! (Call the church office, or signify this desire on your communication card). What a grand celebration and a wonderful point of conversation: “I was lost, and now I am found!”

By the way – people are getting saved here at PFMC! As a RiverChurch, we are thrilled that as we GO, the wonderful flow of God’s love changes darkness into light! “Where the river flows, everything will live!”

New Kids Creek!

Yay! Kids' Creek begins this weekend!
This is the big Kickoff - with one combined service at 10am. We'll have the kids lead us in worship, and then after the message (which I am pumped about: Children Matter!) where everyone will get a piece of a puzzle to remember that EVERY child counts - one missing is one too many! And so we will do all we can to help the children in our towns and neighborhoods to come to Jesus! Oh, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
After the message, we'll have an awesome time of prayer, commissioning this new ministry and 'blessing' the children!
Then, an open house in the New Kids' Creek wing - all decorated and beautiful! The kids will meet their teachers, get registered and the full deal happens the next week!
Yay for the awesome volunteers at the awesome Portage Free Methodist Church, where we are learning to act like a River. Wherever the River flows, everything will live!

"YOU'RE IN MY SPOT"

"Who do they think they are?" "They are in my spot!" "I've been in this same spot for months, don't they know this is my spot?" "What am I going to do?" "That spot is where I'm the most comfortable." This is the conversation I had with myself on Wednesday morning when I went to the gym for exercise class and found someone had already setup in MY SPOT. I got there early as usual to make sure I got my usual spot, but somehow this devious person snuck in there and took my spot. It's funny how I vilified this person's intentions and actions, based solely on my feelings. It was about then the Holy Spirit intervened and started speaking to me. "Dale, wait a minute. I'm trying to teach you something here." So, I took a deep breath and said, "OK Lord, help me understand what you want me to learn from this."

"First, Change is hard isn't it?" "Dale you've got to move out of your comfort zone, get out of your routine. Are you willing to?" Wow, that hit me! I'm pretty self disciplined as long as things go the way I want them to. But, get me out of my routine I start to feel uneasy and stressed. I thought this is a pretty normal feeling that everyone must go through. Then I heard the words, "EXACTLY, everyone is uncomfortable with change. It doesn't matter where it occurs, even in the church!" I started to think about all the changes that have occurred in our church. A new pastor, the cafe, new kid's program, music style, etc. There are probably some people that are uneasy with the changes. That doesn't make the change bad, it's just that change is hard sometimes.

Then I started to think on the words I heard earlier, "Dale, you've got to move out of your comfort zone, get out of your routine. Are you willing to?" The lyrics to the song, "Lord Move, or Move Me" came to mind...

Lord move in a way, that I've never seen before

Cause there's a mountain in the way and a lock on the door

I'm drifting away, waves are crashing on the shore

So Lord move (move), or move me.

Out of this place of complacency

To a place of fellowship with thee

Cause I am weak but Lord you are so strong

And you know it's been way too long (been way too long)

Lord move in the way, that I've never seen before

Cause there's a mountain in the way and I'll knock on the door

So Lord move (move)...

What could I say but, "Yes Lord, I'm willing to move." It was special moment, when the Holy Spirit just seemed to wrap His arms around me and comfort me with the words, "I'll be there with you, you'll do ok and you will see something new, refreshing, and from another perspective."

Class started and I looked at this person that was in my old spot with a whole different attitude. An attitude of gratitude.

Leadership Summit

When you think of something called Leadership Summit and see speakers like Tony Blair, David Gergen, or Bono you don't think it will make your heart and soul grow as much as your head, but Summit is just as much a spiritual retreat as it is a leadership development event.

The highlights for me were Harvey Carey, pastor in Detroit who challenged us to get out of the Huddle, Tim Keller who challenged me about being an elder brother in the prodigal son story, and Gary Hamel, KIVA.org, and the Heath Brothers all talking about change and innovation. Everything was inspiring in some way.

One brainstorm we had at the Summit was the idea of meeting once a month to further process each of the seeeions that we saw. We will be getting the Video of each session so watch for more details on when those will be.

The inside is the real you! Maybe you're a bit sad by how your exterior life has turned out so far. Maybe you don't think you're one of the pretty people. Maybe your job seems 2nd rate. Maybe your success is, well, not so much. But God is doing, and longs to do something INSIDE of you! 2 Corinthians says that God is making you into a new creation! And what's going on inside of you is worth investing in, at least as much as what's on the outside!
Don't worry if your "outside" is not so good. God is doing something "inside" - and that makes you beautiful!

River Church

Here is a sample of our new original worship song "A River Church". We hope to make a better quality full length recording at the end of June so watch for it when that is available.
I am so blessed by everyone's response to the song.
My hope in writing it was that it would be a corporate, but more so a personal anthem for us the church. The bible speaks of us as individuals being the temple of the Holy Spirit.
So as we sing..."let the river of God flow from his temple again..." don't think bricks and mortar, but body and soul or hands and feet...YOUR hands...YOUR feet. I pray that a spirit of revival would sweep through and start with each of our individual hearts and then catch fire to the whole. Let the River Flow!

Well, it's finally here: Vision Sunday!
For 8 months, we've worked and prayed and brainstormed...
18+ desserts where I preached a message on Luke 15 and lead a time of praying and brainstorming: What would God dream for our church?
The church at prayer, including the Daniel Fast, where we asked God's Spirit to fall on us and lead us.
The Leadership Team, brainstorming and praying along with me.
The Management Team, brainstorming and praying along with me.
The Focus groups who prayerfully heard and helped perfect the message a few weeks ago.

And now, it's Vision Week!
Yay!
Ezekiel 47:9 says "Where the river flows, everything will live!"

Go: Aggressively pursuing lost people.
Grow: Normalize disciple-making participation.
Give: Prioritize generosity.
Live: Intentionally make room for others.

God is up to something really awesome -- I can't wait as we unvail it!
Sunday, we will have Baptisms and new members and a celebration of a bright future.

God Uses Anybody

So this morning I'm reading from Exodus, end of chapter 5 and into 6.
Basically, Moses says to God: "Ever since I spoke your name there has been trouble and you have not rescued your people at all."
God's answer is this: "I am and I will."
"I am the Lord."
"I will...bring you out, free you, redeem you, take you as my own, be your God."
And I thought - how my time table is not the same as God's. I want things done now. I'm in "hurry mode" and if something should be done, well, yesterday is when it should have been done...
And that impacts my relationship with God. "How long?" It's like I know what God wants to do, or can do, and yet - why not yet?
And today I'm reminded that God's promise stands strong. God is. And he knows. He cares. He can. And He will.
For you too.

The Book Club That Wasn't

So, I'm feeling like a bit of a slacker as a book club leader...seeing as I cancelled the first week of January because I wasn't prepared. And then last week, we were supposed to meet, but due to bad weather (big surprise) that didn't happen. And now that the February date for our next meeting is looming I guess that we'll just go on from here with a new book.

But, here's the cool thing I want to share with you. Last spring I began to feel a bit "stirred up" by God, or probably more correctly - by the Holy Spirit. A lot of thoughts were circulating through my head - like "what exactly does God want me to do with the rest of my life?" and "how can I figure out what I'm supposed to be doing?" and "how can I make sure that I'm not wasting my life on useless pursuits?" So I started praying and reading and asking God to give me some direction. And I felt like my search was being somewhat fruitful - God allowed me to see some things from new perspectives - more godly perspectives, I believe.

So then, fast-forward to November. I was trying to pick out a book for the book club at PFMC and on a recommendation I chose "The New Conspirators" by Tom Sine. So really, without knowing much about it, I ordered six copies from Amazon and passed them out.

By the time I was halfway through the book I knew that this book was put into my hands to help me continue to sort out where I was going and to help me work out my faith. I won't go into great detail here, because I could go on and on and on. But, suffice it to say, this book had quite a profound effect on me. I am still re-reading and thinking through some of the concepts, but it has prompted me to continue seeking God's plan for my future. And to not be content with the status quo.

This book of full of examples of people who are living out their faith - not just talking about it. They are taking risks and steppping outside the bounds of organized religion to fulfill the commands of Jesus. They are walking the walk - and that is a challenge to me as I wallow about in my comfortable existence.

I do not want to get to the end of my life and look back over it with regret. It scares me sometimes to realize how much I crave the things of the world at the expense of living my life for Christ and his Kingdom.

I am in pursuit of living my life the way that Christ called me to.

Driven to Distraction

I've discovered a few things about myself lately. One is that I'm not particularly consistent in my habits. It's been...let's see, how many weeks since my last post? It's not that I don't like to do this...I'm just very easily distracted by life. That is the second thing I'm learning. There are lots of days that I just can't seem to keep my attention on one thing for more than a few minutes. It's scary the power that a sink full of dirty dishes or a pile of laundry has over me. I can sit down to read or write or work on a project and ten minutes later I'm pushing the vacuum around, or worse...doing something like checking my email for the umpteenth time that day or opening the pile of mail that's been sitting on the counter for the last week.

Other than driving myself crazy with these behaviors, there is a deeper problem with my tendency to be so easily distracted. It leads me to be a poor steward of my time. Even though I am busy doing things, I often don't get things done when they should be finished and I waste a lot of time transitioning from task to task. Or I find myself doing two or more things at once...and not really giving the needed attention to either. Like right now, for instance, I am writing this while watching...a Law and Order rerun. (Of course, that's a whole other topic - wasting time watching TV. We'll save that for another day.) But the point is, I'm not totally focused on either task and neither one gets done well. OK, I'm turning the TV off now.

Anyway, I believe that God brings things to my attention because he thinks I need to do something about them. And in this case I'm sensing he would like me to learn to focus on the task at hand and give it my all. There's a verse in the Bible that says - I'm paraphrasing here - that whatever we do we should do it to the best of our ability and unto the Lord. That's a fairly straightforward command. But for me, I know this means I need to be disciplined enough to turn my back on the distrations that come my way.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, as they say. This kind of thinking has a domino effect for me - discovering one weakness or bad habit somehow shines a light on another one and so on. But I do know this much...that God has some important things for me to do and to find out what they are I need to begin paying more attention to Him and less to Jack McCoy.

Lost Things

We lost our dog, Marva, the 8 pound Chihuahua.

What makes it worse is this: we were in the middle of Wyoming at the front edge of a 6 week long, once in a lifetime trip around America.

Somehow, at one of our lookouts – we all got out (including Marva) but we didn’t all get back in! That meant Marva was lost in Wyoming – and we feared for her life! Signs let us know that bears were in the area and the sun was dropping fast. That night was terrible. We lay down in our little popup camper next to a raging river, wondering if we would ever see our little girl-dog again!

The kids cried. The parents cried. We all cried out to God “Please – help us find her!” We just couldn’t bear the thought of her wandering in the mountains, missing her family!

The next morning, we awoke from a very fitful nights sleep – hoping against hope that it was all a very bad dream. It wasn’t. Marva’s spot was empty.

We called home and asked my secretary to check the answering machine at my house. We sat, quiet, heartsick, and waited. Fifteen minutes later – she called and said “Marva is safe!”

Our heavy hearts turned happy and we celebrated! I’ll never forget the laughter and good food – the party we had at the Percup Café in ‘Ten Sleep’ Wyoming – our lost dog was found!

Eventually, we retrieved her at the Cody, Wyoming animal shelter, where a good hearted lawyer from Idaho had dropped her off. Thankfully, he called the number on her tags first – and that’s a good ending to a very scary story.

Only it’s not the end.

I’m haunted by it. Not so much the losing the dog part, but that I can remember how badly I cared that Marva was missing.

Jesus told us a story in Luke 15 – about a lost sheep, a lost coin, and then that story about the lost boy – the “prodigal son”. And here’s what haunts me.

Jesus made it clear that lost things matter. Lost people matter to God! And they ought to matter to us. I’m afraid that I cared more for the lost dog than I do for lost people. I cried and prayed and looked and looked for that little four legged creature – how often do I do that – do I plead with God about lost people?

But here’s what’s happening: As I pray – I pray that my heart will grow larger towards lost people. And God is answering that prayer.

I’m glad our church aims at finding those who are lost. I love that lost people get found! Imagine that great party in heaven whenever one lost sinner repents! Here’s the good part: it’s our party too!

The Kingdom

Wow - what a great meeting with the Leadership Team!

At our last meeting, I began to share results from the Dream Big series of desserts.

Rather than trying to unpack all the information that I've heard, I decided to make sure that we're building our foundation correctly.

So, we talked about two things:

1 - We will set our sights on building and learning to live in the Kingdom. If you look closely at the words of Jesus, you'll soon realize that while the concept of Heaven is very real, that's not all he talks about. When Jesus refers to the Kingdom of Heaven, he's often referring to it a bit of Heaven invading earth (Your kingdom come!)... Remember, it was Jesus who said "The Kingdom is WITHIN you!" May we invite people into this new Kingdom - celebrate the Kingdom, and learn to live as Kingdom people. I'm excited about this terminology.

2 - Thanks to Don Cousins book, "Leadershift", I was reminded that the best place to start any work for God, is by seeking his Spirit. Jesus, as he was leaving to go back to heaven, challenged hi followers to go and wait for the Holy Spirit. They did - 10 days or so! They waited and prayed. And eventually - the Holy Spirit came in power! Peter preached, people repented and 3000 were added! Wow! We want in on that!

So, the prayer challenge that I gave was one of 3 words: Come Holy Spirit. Invade our lives and invade our church. We knelt at our chairs and prayed - what an awesome time! We'll continue praying that prayer: "Come Holy Spirit" as we capture God's vision for our church. Wow!

What a fantastic staff!

Last night, my wonderful wife hosted an awesome party for an awesome staff!

We sang, laughed, opened "white elephant" gifts and did our best to corporately quote the Christmas story. (Not the movie, but from Luke 2!)

25 of us total!

What fun!

I am truly blessed to serve with such an amazing group!

Can I speak to you about politics?
There's a certain level of fear, and combined with the way our politicians practice loving, or rather, not loving each other, adds up to apathy. Then, that leads us to "whatever" - meaning, it just doesn't matter what we do.
I think God would be pleased if we realized that "greater is he that is in me" and acted upon the truth that "I can do all things through Christ".
In other words: see a problem? Fix it. You can. Yes you can.
What do you notice? What problem needs fixed? Try - and see what happens. God is just possibly stronger than you think!

Zero Hour comes Full Circle

On Oct 24th three high school guys and I served at Zero Hour. This is an all nighter for middle school kids run by YFC here in Kalamazoo.

That's right ALL NIGHT and over 1000 Middle school kids...did I mention this was all night?! Our church brought a group of 28, way to go Craig Smith, Jeff Shadley, and Jackie Northup, for being the adult leaders!

It was great night! There was inflatables, TONS of pizza, a powerful drama, a chat room where kids could write their prayers to God or talk to a caring adult, and a challenging gospel message. Several kids came forward to give their lives to Jesus, and hundreds of kids came forward to say they wanted to renew their commitment to following Jesus.

But the coolest part for me were the guys that came with me to serve. We ran the Valuables room & Wally ball court. Nothing very exciting happened during the night, but the cool thing for me was to realize that two of the three guys serving with me were following Christ because of Zero Hour.

It was 3 years ago that I met Shayne. He and a couple of his friends responded to the gospel and came a talked with me that night. I invited them to start attending our church, and they did. Shayne brought Austin with him and later that year Austin came with us to Spring Hill, which is where we go for our winter retreat weekend each year, and it was during that weekend that Austin committed his life to following Christ.

PFMC exists to develop faithful followers of Christ, who will develop other faithful followers of Christ.

As I sat back and let my mind wonder at about 3am that night I realized that this what our mission statement looks like fleshed out: One Student Finds Christ. Invites a friend. Connects with the Church. Their friend finds Christ. And then they volunteer together to see other kids find Christ, and the circle starts all over again.

It's stories like these that help me reaffirm that this is something I want to give my life to.

Make Yourself Comfortable...Not!

OK, so here's something I've been thinking alot about lately. It's been coming at me from all directions, and when that happens...God usually gets my attention.

Somewhere along the line, I picked up the idea that being comfortable is something to strive for in life. Now, I'm not saying that it's necessarily bad to be comfortable...but when that is my goal, it is a bad thing.

I'm a bit of a homebody...this time of year I love coming home at night, eating a hot, hearty meal (preferably one I didn't have to make), sitting down with the paper, flipping on the TV for a while, and then heading up to bed with a good book to read before falling asleep.

But here's something I'm learning. When I am overly focused on my own comforts, wants, preferences, etc...I can become a really ineffective Christian. But, here's another thing...that's typically when I am jolted out of my comfort zone in some way.

This has been happening more and more to me lately, so I've started to pick up on the things that God does and doesn't want me to be spending my time on. I'm nowhere near where I should be, but I've passed the point of ignoring God and doing my own thing. He is making me uncomfortable about some things in my life, and that is making me want to figure out what it is He really wants me to be doing.

If I stay in my comfort zone, I don't grow. I'm not even giving God the chance to use me.

What I think is really cool, though, is that God is not letting me get away with being comfortable. He's continually making me uncomfortable...and I'm actually thankful for that. In my discomfort I turn to Him more and more and in the process realize how my comfortable life actually keeps me from participating in the abundant life that Christ offers.

When I'm comfortable all the time, I feel in control of my life. When I'm uncomfortable, I realize that I'm really not in control. God is. So for me, right now, being uncomfortable is a good place to be.

I want to be rich - don't you?

Well, what if you found out that you already WERE rich? What if, you just didn't know how to BE rich? Hmmm.

Well - Jesus tells us that we should be rich toward God - and that's exactly what we're talking about this weekend.

Using John Ortberg's book "When the Game is Over It All Goes Back in the Box", we'll learn over the next few weeks about how best to use our stuff. Certainly, we can't take it with us, but we can send it on ahead! So check out these staggering stats:

If you earn 50 thousand a year, you are in the top half of all Americans.

If you earn 75 thousand or more, you're in the top 1/4 of Americans.

If you earn 165 thousand or more, you're in the top 5% and if you earn 250k or more a year, you are in the top 1 1/2 % of Americans.

Now let me really wreck you...

If you earn 35 thousand or more a year, you are in the top 4 1/2 % richest people in the world.

If you earn more than 50 thousand a year, you are in the top 1%.

Guess what: you're rich! Is it everything you'd hoped it would be? Time to learn to BE rich!

What Makes Great Churches Great

It's the people - and how they live out loud their love for God.
Yesterday, a couple couples from a great church (props to CrossRoads in Ottawa Lake) came and visited me here in my new digs. Their daughters were visiting mine for the weekend - so they came to reclaim their girls.
But they came early and went to church with us.
Now, CrossRoads is an amazing church - ginormous and cutting edge.
And these four (Barry and Shelly and Jim and LeAnn) just totally gushed on our church (here in Portage) and our service. They made me feel so good! We spent the whole afternoon together and over and again, they would mention what a good work God is doing here in Portage. Wow.
So, that's what makes a great church great. Humble people, living out loud their love for God. Finding the good in every circumstance - and celebrating the good they see.

Jealous?

No one wants to be jealous. No one chooses to be jealous. There are no benefits to being jealous.

Jealousy makes you feel rotten. Jealousy is stupid. Jealous people look dumb and they do dumb things. I've been jealous of people who have something that I don't even want -- that's crazy!

Once, I realized I was jealous of my Youth Pastor. Well, Brian Kono used to be my Youth Pastor, back when I pastored in Westand, MI. And then, because he was so good - they invited him to join the Spring Arbor University staff! Yay for Brian! Along with that came national recognition and cool leadership opportunities. Then, one day, I saw a picture of some kid wearing a t-shirt with Brian's face on it - complete with his goatee. Now, I'm not cool enough to wear a goatee, and no one ever made a t-shirt with my face on it (hmmm, maybe there's a good reason for that!) Anyway, when I saw that picture, I realize I was jealous.

That's stupid. Brian and I are friends - I've invested in him and he's a sought after dude -- but, well, no one ever made a shirt with my picture on it. Jealous.

Here's how I got over my jealousy.

I started wearing the shirt.

I celebrated Brian! I'm proud of his accomplishments - and I let him and others know that. I think that's what Paul was talking about when he said "rejoice with those who rejoice." You see, everyone around you will either become your teammate or your rival. So celebrate as often as possible. And you'll find jealousy no longer hangs around.

The Middle Ages

I don't really know when I first started noticing it...but I have finally come to grips with the fact that my youth has passed me by. Well, maybe there's a whisper of it now and then, just to tease me, but for the most part I feel like I've arrived at middle age. Maybe it has to do with the 25th college reunion I attended a couple of weeks ago or maybe it's the gray hairs that are getting harder to hide. Whatever it is, it's here...and it ain't goin' away!

There's another female living in our house who I can commiserate with. We call her "the old lady". Her name is Maggie and she's 11...make that 77 in people years. If I think that I'm aging fast, I have only to look back over her short life to see that she has gone from being an energetic pup to a very mature old gal in a much shorter period of time than a person would.

But here's the deal. As sobering as it is sometimes to realize how quickly our lives on earth go by, there is a lot to be said about the perspective that comes with age. I think that the less time you have left to spend, the more you want to make sure that you are spending it by doing things that make a difference. I know for me, I have more of a desire to obey God and a willingness to spend time figuring out what He has for me to do than I did when I was younger. I'm not so self-centered. I'm more compassionate. And I think these are good things.

So these days when I'm tempted to wish for something that no longer is, it's getting easier to be content with where I am. I'm looking forward to what God has in store for me to do, not looking back and wishing for the past. I'm able to echo Paul's words in Phipippians - "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation...I can do everything through Him who gives me strength".

Groeschel Messing With Me

I've been reading this amazing book: IT - How Churches and Leaders can Get IT and Keep IT.
I like IT.
IT - in case you don't know, is an unexplainable phenomena, that intangible but almost palpable feeling you get in some churches and not in others. Does that help? How about this: IT is the power of the Holy Spirit unleashed and unabated in a local church - the spirit blows where it chooses, no? However you describe it, IT is a gift from God - and it's one gift I want.
So, Craig said this: "...almost every with-it church I've observed is virtually obsessed with reaching those who don't know Christ. A passion to share Christ consumes them in a beautiful way."
I agree - I am passionate about finding lost people!
And then, Craig messed me up when he asked these questions:

"When is the last time you've had a lost person in your home? (The plumber who repaired your sink doesn't count.)
How many meaningful conversations did you have with non-Christians this week?
Who are the nonbelievers you prayed for today?

I couldn't answer those questions very well. And I'm convicted.
Certainly - I have good reason - I just moved here for crying out loud! I don't know anyone! But I know that it's awfully easy for my entire life to be consumed with church-world and think I'm doing what Jesus would do.
He made the time to spend with those outside the church family. Of course, he can make time - He created time!
And I believe he can create within me a heart that is driven to find and love the lost. But he won't do it without me. I'll aim, I'll arrange my schedule, and I'll pray for lost and that my heart will be broken!
I wish I was better at doing what I know is right.
I'm praying to start and build relationships with those who are far from God. Will you pray too?

It Came From Within!

We continue our series - and this week, I'm talking about anger.

Have you ever gotten angry?

Ever have those imaginary conversations with someone - and you realize: "Hey, I guess I haven't gotten over that!"

Here's what I've found out: we all get angry when we don't get what we want.

Sometimes, we should have gotten what we wanted - it was the right thing! And, well, we are angry.

Anger doesn't go away by itself. In fact - if it's supressed, it just gets worse and does internal damage.

But there is a way to fix it! There is a way to overcome it!

Small Groups...Big Benefits

Last week my small group book club met for the first time. The selection for discussion was "The Shack" written by William P. Young. Now I know there has been some criticism aimed at this book regarding its theology...but you know, it's a work of fiction. So, I'll save those discussions for someone else.

What we did talk about was the main character's encounter with God. We talked about the characteristics of God, the work of the Holy Spirit and the relationship we have with Jesus. We talked about the fact that God never abandons us, longs to help us crawl out of our pain, and responds to evil with goodness.

Not only did we talk about the book, we had some coffee and brownies and got to know each other. The way I see it, a small group isn't just about studying...it's about getting to know each other, supporting and praying for each other and creating relationships with others who share the same goal...and at PFMC that goal is to create faithful followers of Christ.

So, let me challenge you to look at small groups this way. If you're in a group, don't just show up every couple of weeks to listen to what someone else has learned. Do some reading on the topic yourself so that you can contribute. If you aren't in a small group, there are plenty to join...or better yet, start your own. What about that couple in your neighborhood you've been meaning to get to know or those guys at work who might enjoy an invitation to lunch? You don't have to prepare a three point sermon outline, but what better way to show someone you care about them than to initiate a contact. You take a step out in faith and see what God can do with your efforts!

One last plug for the book club then. If you are interested in joining us our next meeting is on November 5 at 6:30PM, in the Conference Room. We will be discussing "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis. There were six of us last week...but there's plenty more room around the table.

What's Happening Today God?

Wow, I woke up this morning wondering what God had planned for me today and who He would put in my life. For some reason God has been challenging me to think about the people He brings into my life and what He would have me say to them. Today I decided to make my usual stop for coffee at a nearby service station. I'm not particularly fond of the coffee (it's not Starbucks) but for some reason God seems to be telling me to build a realationship with the sales clerk, who is a young man that is always friendly. Each time I go in we seem to be spending more time talking about things that are important in his life. Today I learned he loves to box, loves to read, loves his dog, and he wanted to be a US Marine but couldn't enlist because of a medical problem. I don't know how relevant the information is, but it sure does help me know about him. I don't know how, but I'm confident the information will somehow be useful to help me go the next step with him and introduce him to my best friend, Jesus. I don't want to be pushy, so I'm just taking it slow and just letting God be God and hope He will open the door of opportunity.

Guilt, Communion, and Worship

Wow - I am getting more and more excited about what I think God is up to for this weekends services. I'm beginning a series based on Andy Stanley's "It Came From Within" and this weeks topic is Guilt. You know, guilt makes us act in some pretty awful ways, doesn't it? It comes up from somewhere down deep and does damage to us, and to the people around us.

Anyway, since this is the first week of the month, we are having communion too - what a great connection!

We're going to have a short worship segment up front, then get right into the message. In the middle of the message, we have a very special moment, where we release our guilt - it will be pretty fun - I won't tell you any more - you better come to experience it!

And then, we'll finish off the message and get into our worship/prayer time which will include communion.

Dale and Kevin and I talked about this service together - our first "programming" moment, where we brainstormed on the best way to get the message across. It was fun! And the payoff will come on Sunday - I can't wait!

The Four of Us!

Kevin DeVries - YOU THE MAN - he's our worship leader, youth pastor, associate pastor, assistant pastor and funny guy. Kevin will touch us deeply with deep thoughts on all things kingdom related. I can't wait to see what you have to say.
Dale Kreh - Dale is too busy to write. He's covering about 6 jobs in this church - most of which are full time. 'Props' to Dale! Dale will bring amazing words of insight and wisdom. He will amaze us with words and thoughts that before now have only been uttered by angels - I can't wait!
And me, Mark Cryderman. I'll holler once in a while too. Mostly unintelligible thoughts, words that aren't really words, and occasionally I'll bark like a dog.

Let It Shine

Gina had a bad day – a really bad day.

Her cigarette hadn’t quite gone out, and when she laid it on the sofa – well – the sofa caught fire.
Thankfully – while the sofa smoldered and the embers began to grow, the smoke wafted up to that plastic “detector” – which had a battery that worked!

That little detector began chirping and beeping, which woke Gina up.

She tried to put out the fire with her fire extinguisher – but couldn’t get it to work. She screamed and her neighbor came to her rescue. They battled the blaze and she was safe. Soon after, the fire department came and tossed the couch down the steps – happy that there was no need for using lifesaving equipment – Gina was safe.

Somehow, through a friend, Gina’s situation presented itself in our office. And Gina’s bad day, now became connected to our busy day – which meant, we had a bad day too.

Sandy hit the phones and soon, Mike and Dale and Guy and Jeff and Mary and Mariah joined me with rags, boxes and tape. Did I mention it was hot and muggy?

So there we were, talking to a self-proclaimed “Agnostic” and trying to help her with her present problems. She made it clear that she didn’t want to us to preach.

We set to work – boxing, cleaning and hauling her stuff from her living room and kitchen, and stacking it in her bedroom. The place was covered with extinguisher dust. Books, papers and computers and TV’s. A dust covered plush chair and melted window blinds – what a mess! Finally – we were dirty but her apartment was clean! She was ready for the carpet installers and painters who were to come the next day. It was brutal work and we were ready to leave.

As we dropped her off at her motel (Thanks Red Cross!) she said to me: “Thanks so much for helping. I could never have done this myself. I’d like to come visit your church sometime – would that be okay?” I said “We’d love to have you!”

Of course, her name isn’t really Gina – I’d hate to embarrass her – but you just never know who you’re sitting next to on Sundays! And you just never know what might happen if you roll up your sleeves and help someone who’s hurting.

Matthew 5:16 (MsgB) Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Keep Praying!

Today, I'm talking about prayer.
Jesus said "ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
ASK - we don't like much to ask - because to ask means we have a need - and that's what we really hate: to admit a need!
SEEK - not obvious - like looking for the tv clicker. Ever walk in the room, glance around and then yell "Honey, where's the tv remote?" Your wife walks in and moves a magazine and voila - there it is! Seek means to be okay with that which is not so obvious. Sometimes, God answers our prayers in a way that we don't expect, or even want. Can you be okay with that?
KNOCK - now, the progression has reached it's zenith. Knock means to expend energy, to give your best, to expend energy. It's to say "I'm not going away, God - I'll keep asking because I know you can change things!"
All this, in the context of - a friend. Jesus told us to pray this way for others (see Luke 11). What incredible love, to invest in others in a way that costs you. To lift others up and never quit - knowing that God can save and help them!

So, I plan to end the message like this: "If you've become weary in well doing - you've been praying for someone and you're getting tired. Stand up. If it looks like the answer is not going to come and you've been tempted to quit praying, stan up. If you've quit praying for someone - yet the need is still there and your heart still captures their hurt - stand up."
Then, I will walk around and "coach" them a bit - "God hears your prayers - keep them coming!" or "God is good, he's not worried!" or "Hey, God is doing something while you pray - he's doing something in YOU that can only be done this way, or he's doing something IN them - he's answering your prayer - just don't quit - it's worth it!" or "Hey, the fat lady has not yet started to sing - keep on praying!"

Then, I'll close with this: "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" He'll give you what you need!

Yay God!

Prayer - Me to We

Well, this morning I'm preaching on prayer - italk part two. And in this section of the "Lord's" prayer, we learn that Jesus is interested in our UNITY. All of the pronouns are like this: Our, us, our, us, our, we our, us, us -- wow - I think, it's about US, not about ME. In fact, my challenge is this: Prayer at its best moves me from ME to WE. Not a bad concept!

As we move into our Visioneering time at PFMC - there will be many needs - "God, give us what we need!" and I'm sure misunderstandings and potential turf wars "God, help us to be forgiving people!" and in fact, we are jumping into a battle against the evil one himself - "God, deliver us from evil!"

Yay God - you bring the victory!

Well, this is the spot to find all the Portage Free Methodist happenings.

Why did we call it "Dream Big"? Because we are a bunch of dreamers - and that's a good thing.

We dream - dreams that would make God proud. Dreams that keep us close to his heart. Dreams of fulfilling God's great redemptive plan.

Dreams are usually not real. They're "wishes".

But we serve a God that does things beyond our hopes - and in fact, more than we could ever dream! So as we dream, we also expect - that God will do all that and more - to HIS glory!

And this blog is meant to keep us focussed and in the know with God's greatest dreams for us, the Portage Free Methodist family!

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Eph. 3:20-21)
